The winter when she was four years old, she learned her ABC's and the basic sounds of each. Then she went to my parents (like every year) for part of the summer. To my amazement, when she returned home she was decoding words far beyond her years, and reading and understanding first grade books. I knew my mother, a teacher, used a powerful phonics program with her own students. When I asked my daughter how she learned to read, she said she sounded out words each morning at breakfast (about a minute a day). That was all the time she spent on it!!!

My daughter is now ten years old, and has never had problems with her school homework. The basis for all her learning has been her ability to read at much higher grade levels. And the self-esteem my daughter has will last a lifetime!
